Your Way to Albania

Why September Belongs to the Albanian Riviera

August gets the photographs. September gets the Riviera.

There is a particular moment on Albania’s southern coast when summer does not exactly end; it simply becomes quieter. The umbrellas are still open. The Ionian Sea is still warm. Boats continue to leave small harbours for hidden beaches. Dinner still happens outdoors.

But something has changed.

The coastal road is easier to enjoy. You can hear the water again. A table overlooking the sea does not necessarily require a plan made hours in advance. And in places that spent July and August moving at full speed, life begins to resemble itself again.

This is September on the Albanian Riviera. Not an alternative to summer. Perhaps its best version.

The Riviera After the Rush

The Albanian Riviera has changed enormously as its international popularity has grown. Dhërmi, Himarë, Borsh, Qeparo and the coastline stretching toward Sarandë now attract travellers from across Europe and beyond.

In July and August, that popularity is impossible to miss. September tells another story. The first weeks of the month still carry plenty of summer energy, but the peak holiday crowds begin disappearing. That seemingly small change transforms the experience.

Imagine arriving at a beach because you noticed the colour of the water from the road; not because you reserved a sunbed there. Or stopping for lunch without calculating whether you will lose your parking space. That freedom may be September’s greatest luxury.

The Sea Doesn't Know August Is Over

The calendar says autumn is approaching. The Ionian Sea has other ideas. After absorbing the summer sun for months, the water remains comfortably warm through much of September, particularly earlier in the month. Swimming, kayaking and boat trips therefore remain part of an ordinary Riviera day rather than activities you need to brave cooler conditions for.

And the experience can actually improve. With fewer swimmers and boats competing for the same stretches of coastline, places that felt busy in August can suddenly feel spacious.

A morning swim at Livadhi, a boat ride from Himarë or an afternoon in one of the smaller coves between the Riviera’s towns feels different when you have time to notice the cliffs, the transparent water and the mountains behind you. September doesn’t remove summer. It removes some of its noise.

Choose Your September Riviera

Not every destination changes in the same way once peak season passes. That is precisely what makes a September road trip interesting.

Place

September Personality

Best For

Dhërmi

Stylish summer energy gradually becoming calmer

Couples, beach lovers, sunsets

Himarë

Lively enough to feel social, relaxed enough to slow down

Longer stays, food, boat trips

Qeparo

Quiet, intimate and wonderfully unhurried

Slow travel, village atmosphere

Borsh

Open coastline with an even greater sense of space

Peace, road trips, long beach days

Sarandë

More urban and active after smaller resorts begin winding down

Restaurants, nightlife, day trips

You do not necessarily have to choose only one. September is made for moving slowly down the coast.

Drive Without Treating the Road as an Obstacle

In peak summer, travelling between Riviera destinations can become something you simply have to get through.

In September, the road becomes part of the holiday again.

Leave Dhërmi after breakfast. Stop because a viewpoint looks good. Continue toward Himarë. Swim somewhere you had not planned to visit. Have lunch later than expected. Pull over again when Porto Palermo appears below the road.

No checklist required. This is one of the great pleasures of travelling Albania independently: some of the most memorable moments happen between the places you originally intended to see. September gives those moments more room to happen.

Stay for Dinner, Not Just the Sunset

There is another side of the Riviera that is easily missed when beaches dominate the itinerary: its food.

By September, slowing down for lunch or dinner feels almost natural. Order grilled fish. Add a village salad, local cheese, vegetables, bread and olive oil. Ask what is fresh rather than automatically choosing the most familiar item on the menu.

Then don’t rush anywhere. Himarë is particularly good for combining coastal life with this slower rhythm, while villages and smaller stops around Borsh and Qeparo offer a chance to experience the south beyond its most photographed beaches.

The Albanian Riviera was never supposed to be experienced entirely from a sunbed. September makes that easier to remember.

The Golden Hours Become the Main Event

At 14:00, the Riviera is beautiful. At 18:30, it becomes something else.

Late-summer light softens the mountains. White and stone houses above the coast begin catching warmer colours. The sea changes from bright turquoise to darker blue, and the temperature becomes more comfortable for walking through villages or sitting outside.

This is when you should leave the beach occasionally. Walk through old Himarë. Climb into Qeparo’s older settlement. Find a terrace above the coastline. Drive without a strict destination.

A September Riviera trip rewards travellers who understand that the best hour of the day may begin when everyone starts packing their beach bags.

September Is Not August at a Discount

It is tempting to describe September mainly through comparisons: fewer crowds, potentially better-value accommodation, easier roads. All true. But that undersells the month. September is valuable because the Riviera itself feels different.

You still get the fundamental ingredients of an Albanian coastal trip – the Ionian Sea, beaches, seafood, mountain scenery, boat trips and warm evenings, but the pace becomes more forgiving.

You can stay somewhere because you like it rather than because your itinerary says it is time to move. You can return to the same restaurant. You can spend an entire afternoon swimming. You can do absolutely nothing and not feel as though you are wasting valuable holiday time. That is what shoulder-season travel is supposed to feel like.

One Small Catch: September Changes Quickly

There is a difference between arriving on September 3 and September 27.

Early September often feels remarkably close to summer. As the month progresses, smaller seasonal businesses may reduce their hours or close, nightlife becomes quieter and weather becomes somewhat less predictable. That does not make late September a bad choice.

It simply attracts a different traveller. Come early in the month if you want the strongest combination of summer atmosphere and reduced crowds. Choose mid-September for perhaps the best balance. Consider later September if silence, road trips and slower coastal days matter more to you than having every beach club operating. September gives you choices that August rarely does.

So, Who Does September Belong To?

It belongs to the couple who wants to stop the car every twenty minutes.

To the swimmer who wants one more hour in the sea.

To the traveller who orders another coffee because there is nowhere they urgently need to be.

To the photographer waiting for the beach to empty.

To the person who would rather remember a conversation over dinner than how many beaches they managed to visit in five days.

And perhaps that is why September suits the Albanian Riviera so well.

This coastline is spectacular in summer. But once the busiest weeks pass, you begin noticing what was behind all that beauty in the first place: villages above the sea, olive-covered hills, fishing boats, mountain roads, long dinners and an Ionian horizon that does not particularly care what month is written on your calendar.

August may introduce you to the Albanian Riviera.

September gives you time to know it.

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. But that’s okay. The journey changes you it should change you.”

– Anthony Bourdain
